Of all the mistakes that can derail a vehicle export order, ordering the wrong steering configuration is the most costly, because it cannot be fixed after the fact. This guide covers what every export buyer needs to confirm before placing an order.

LHD and RHD Are Not Cosmetic

Left-hand drive (LHD) and right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles are built on different production lines with mirrored dashboard assemblies, steering columns, pedal boxes and often different suspension and structural mounting points. This is not something that can be retrofitted or converted after the vehicle is built — a RHD vehicle cannot legally or practically be converted to LHD, and vice versa. Ordering the wrong configuration means the vehicle cannot be registered or driven in your destination country at all.

Roughly a Third of the World Drives on the Left

Around 65–70 countries worldwide drive on the left and require RHD vehicles, including the UK, Japan, most of Southern and Eastern Africa, Australia, and much of South and Southeast Asia. The remaining majority of countries, including nearly all of the Americas, mainland Europe, and most of the Middle East, drive on the right and require LHD.

Check Your Destination, Not the Manufacturer's Home Market

China itself drives on the right, so LHD is the default configuration for most BYD production. However, BYD produces RHD variants for many models specifically to serve export markets like South Africa and other RHD countries. Never assume availability — confirm the steering configuration for your specific model and destination on the relevant market page, where every listed vehicle displays its available steering configuration as a badge.

A Simple Pre-Order Checklist

  • Confirm which side of the road your destination country drives on.
  • Confirm the specific model you want is produced in that configuration — not every model has both LHD and RHD variants available at every point in time.
  • Get written confirmation of the steering configuration on your order documents before deposit.
  • If you are ordering used units, double-check the configuration in the listing rather than assuming — used inventory is a fixed, individual vehicle, not a build-to-order spec.

This single check, done before deposit rather than after the container arrives, is the difference between a smooth import and a vehicle that cannot be registered on arrival.
