Range is usually the second question buyers ask after price, and it is a harder one to answer precisely on a used vehicle than on a new one. A used BYD's remaining usable range depends on two numbers: the model's original CLTC range when new, and its current battery state of health (SoH). This guide explains how to combine those two figures into a reasonable estimate, using our current 12-model used inventory as examples.

The Estimation Logic

State of health measures how much of a battery's original usable capacity remains. A rough, buyer-friendly way to estimate remaining range is to multiply the model's original CLTC range by its current SoH percentage. This is not an exact figure — actual range on any given trip is also affected by climate, driving speed, terrain, cabin heating or air conditioning use, and driving style — but it is a reasonable starting point for comparing used units against each other before you look at real-world test data or request a longer diagnostic history from the seller.

Working Through the Numbers

Take the Han EV as an example: it has a 715 km CLTC range when new. A unit with roughly 93% SoH would be estimated at approximately 715 x 0.93, or around 665 km of remaining usable range under CLTC-equivalent conditions. That is meaningfully more range than most other used BYD units in our inventory can offer, even before accounting for the fact that CLTC ratings themselves tend to be optimistic relative to real-world driving in many markets.

Compare that to a compact model like the Seagull, which has a much smaller original CLTC range. Even at a near-perfect 98% SoH, its estimated remaining range in kilometers will be substantially lower than the Han EV's, simply because the starting point — original battery capacity and CLTC rating — is smaller. This is the core reason SoH alone does not tell you which used BYD has the most usable range: a 99% SoH compact hatchback can still have less real-world range than a 90% SoH flagship sedan or SUV.

Models to Consider for Maximum Remaining Range

  • Han EV — 715 km CLTC new, ~93% SoH — highest estimated remaining range in our current inventory
  • Tang EV — large-battery flagship SUV, ~91% SoH — strong remaining range despite higher mileage
  • e6 — 522 km CLTC new, 89% SoH — solid remaining range from a large original battery pack, at a lower price point than the Han EV or Tang EV
  • Sealion 7 and Seal — strong CLTC ranges when new combined with SoH in the mid-to-high 90s, giving high remaining range with less mileage than the flagship models

Why This Matters for Import Buyers

Buyers importing for long-distance use — intercity ride-hailing, regional delivery, or personal use in areas with sparse charging infrastructure — should prioritize original CLTC range and SoH together, not SoH in isolation. A high SoH percentage on a small-battery model is not a substitute for a genuinely large usable range. Buyers whose use case is primarily short-distance city driving, on the other hand, can safely prioritize price and condition over maximum range, since even a lower-range unit will usually cover daily driving needs comfortably.

Treat the multiplication above as a planning estimate, not a guaranteed figure — real-world range will vary by destination climate and driving conditions, and we encourage buyers to build in a reasonable margin when planning routes or duty cycles around any used EV's estimated range.
