Thailand is, on paper, one of the most favorable markets in the region for importing a new BYD — but the picture changes completely if you're considering a used vehicle. It's important to separate the two cases clearly before you order.
New BYD imports: the favorable case
- Import duty: China-origin electric vehicles generally qualify for 0% import duty into Thailand under the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA).
- Excise tax benefit: Thailand's BOI EV3/EV3.5 incentive scheme layers on additional reductions to excise tax for qualifying battery-electric vehicles, on top of the 0% ACFTA tariff.
- VAT: A standard 7% VAT applies on customs value plus any applicable duty.
With duty at 0% and only 7% VAT applying, the tax load on a new fully-electric BYD landing in Thailand is among the lowest of any market we work with.
Used BYD imports: not recommended
Thailand's trade policy has long treated commercial import of used passenger vehicles for resale as effectively prohibited. The nominal duty rate on used vehicles runs around 80%, but in practice the bigger issue is that used-vehicle import for resale purposes is not a workable commercial channel under current policy. If your goal is to bring a BYD into Thailand, plan around a new-vehicle order — used units are not something we recommend pursuing for this market.
Landed cost formula
- FOB price of the vehicle
- + $1,450 fixed ocean freight
- + Insurance (1.1% of FOB)
- + Import duty (Thailand's duty rate × CIF value — 0% for qualifying new EVs)
- + VAT (7% × (CIF + duty))
- + $650 fixed clearance and documentation fee
- = Total Landed Cost
Because duty drops out of the equation entirely for a qualifying new EV, the landed cost for a new BYD into Thailand is essentially FOB price plus freight, insurance, VAT on that base, and the clearance fee — a comparatively simple and predictable calculation versus markets where duty is the dominant cost driver.
Timeline
Southeast Asia sea freight from China typically runs 12-20 days, among the shortest transit windows we quote across our full market list.
A note on incentive eligibility
BOI EV incentive qualification and ACFTA origin rules can both shift with policy updates, so it's worth confirming current scheme status before finalizing an order — particularly if you're ordering close to any published incentive-period cutoff.
Documentation buyers typically need
Standard Thai import clearance for a new EV generally involves a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin (to support the ACFTA claim), and BOI-related paperwork if you're claiming the EV3/EV3.5 incentive on top of the tariff waiver. Your broker will confirm the exact set required for your specific import.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I import a used BYD into Thailand at all? Practically speaking, no — commercial import of used passenger vehicles for resale has long been treated as effectively prohibited under Thai trade policy, regardless of the nominal ~80% duty figure. We do not recommend structuring an order around a used unit for this market.
- Does the 0% duty apply to plug-in hybrids too? The ACFTA 0% tariff and BOI incentives are generally targeted at fully battery-electric vehicles; PHEV and combustion models fall under different duty schedules. Confirm your specific model's classification with your broker.
- Is Thailand right-hand drive? Yes — Thailand is an RHD market, matching BYD's RHD export configuration.
- How does Thailand compare to its regional neighbors on EV import cost? Thailand's 0% duty plus 7% VAT is among the lowest combined tax burdens in Southeast Asia for a new EV — see our regional comparison of Southeast Asian EV incentives for a full side-by-side with the Philippines.
Rates shown are indicative only — always confirm current duty, VAT and any EV incentives with a licensed customs broker in-country before ordering.
