Warranty coverage is one of the first questions serious buyers ask, and it's also one of the most misunderstood parts of buying used. The short version: new vehicles get the full warranty term starting from zero, and used vehicles get whatever balance is left of that same term, calculated from the vehicle's original first-registration date and mileage - not from the date you import it. Here's how that works in practice.

The Full New-Vehicle Warranty

Every new BYD vehicle we export carries the manufacturer's full factory warranty: 6 years or 150,000 km on the vehicle, whichever comes first, and 8 years or 150,000 km on the Blade Battery, whichever comes first. Both terms start from zero at first registration in the destination market. This is the maximum coverage window available on any BYD vehicle, new or used - a used vehicle can never have more remaining coverage than a new one, only less.

How Remaining Coverage Works on Used Vehicles

A used BYD vehicle doesn't get a new warranty clock when it's imported. Instead, it carries the remaining balance of its original 6-year/150,000 km vehicle term and 8-year/150,000 km battery term, counted from the date and mileage of its original first registration - wherever and whenever that happened. In practice this means two used vehicles of the same model year can have different remaining coverage if one has significantly higher mileage or was registered earlier in the year than the other.

Because of this, we don't quote a generic "X years remaining" figure across a model - we confirm exact remaining coverage per unit, based on that specific vehicle's documented registration date, current mileage, and service history, before you commit to an order.

How to Estimate Remaining Coverage From Year and Mileage

You can get a reasonable working estimate yourself using two simple checks, run against both the vehicle warranty and the battery warranty separately since they're both time-limited and mileage-limited:

  • Time check: subtract the vehicle's first-registration year from the current year. A vehicle first registered 2 years ago has roughly 4 years left on the 6-year vehicle term and roughly 6 years left on the 8-year battery term, assuming the mileage limit isn't reached first.
  • Mileage check: subtract the vehicle's current odometer reading from 150,000 km. A vehicle with 48,500 km on the clock has roughly 101,500 km left on both the vehicle and battery mileage limits.
  • Binding constraint: whichever of the two checks above produces the smaller remaining figure is the one that actually limits the vehicle's remaining coverage - a low-mileage older vehicle may run out of time before it runs out of mileage allowance, and a high-mileage newer vehicle may run out of mileage allowance well before its time limit expires.

Applied to our representative used units: a 2023 Yuan UP with 17,800 km has both a large time balance and a large mileage balance remaining on both terms. A 2022 e6 with 48,500 km, by contrast, has used up meaningfully more of its mileage allowance relative to its age, which is exactly why we flag ex-fleet mileage as a specific consideration on that model. This same two-check method works for any BYD model in our range - it's a fast way to sanity-check a unit before you ask us for the confirmed figure.

Why Documentation Confirmation Still Matters

The year/mileage method above gives you a working estimate, but the number that matters for your import paperwork and your own resale promises to customers is the confirmed figure from the vehicle's actual service and registration records, not an estimate. Registration dates, service intervals, and any prior warranty claims all factor into the precise remaining coverage, and we pull that documentation for every used unit we offer so buyers aren't relying on odometer math alone.

What This Means for Your Buying Decision

If warranty length is the deciding factor for your market - for example, if your customers expect a long resale-backed coverage window - a new vehicle's full term removes any ambiguity. If you're comfortable with a documented remaining-coverage figure and the lower landed cost that comes with a used unit, a well-chosen used vehicle with low mileage relative to its age, like several of the representative units in our current inventory, can still carry years of meaningful coverage on both the vehicle and the Blade Battery.
